What is Mental Health?
Doing activities that improve your mental health doesn’t mean that you have a mental disorder. Many people think of mental health in terms of the absence of a diagnosable mental disorder. But this definition is too narrow. Mental health is much more than the absence of a disease or illness. It’s about how we think, feel, and act as we cope with life.
About 1 in 5 Americans experience a mental health problem each year—and about 1 in 25 lives with a serious mental illness such as depression or bipolar disorder.
How to improve mental health?
It’s often easy for us to forget about our mental state, but the good ones know the importance of being mentally stable. In fact, a great deal of the time that you’re interacting with others and consuming media (i.e. TV, movies, games), it’s more beneficial than not being able to snarkily comment on what other people are doing wrong or laugh at their misfortune.
It’s not just about providing relief from suffering; a well-rested mind allows us to make much better decisions when we do encounter problems. After all, it pays to be a smart cookie rather than an emotional doofus who falls into the same traps over and over again (and ever notice how depressed guys are just as likely as girls?
The following activities will help improve your mental health and can be done by everyone regardless of age or gender. Meditation – anything from 5 minutes on purpose every day to 20-minute stretches in front of you while watching TV.
What matters is making meditation a regular part of your routine.
Exercise – stay away from sugar and junk food if you want to maintain good physical health, but the benefits don’t need to stop there! Regular exercise will work wonders for your mind too.
Talk Therapy – this doesn’t mean pouring out everything that makes you depressed into a therapist’s ear; instead, talking with someone one-on-one about any feelings that might be troubling you put them in perspective so that they can better assist you.*
Social Media Use – check Facebook every now and then (no more than once per day) but don’t let it become an addiction for you.* Sleep – sleep enables human beings to function properly all around the clock so get enough sleep every day!
For many kids studying through school, nights may mean staying up past midnight on purpose so they can catch up academically during weekends; this may sound nuts but if it works for them then why should anyone else think otherwise?

What are 6 ways to boost your mental health?
1. Start a gardening project
Gardening is one of the easiest ways to improve your mental state. Starting a garden—whether it’s indoors or out—can have immediate benefits and even long-term effects.
In fact, research has shown that gardening and engaging with nature can reduce stress and anxiety, ease depression, and increase overall well-being. It’s easy to get started: you can start small by planting some herbs on a windowsill or potting up a few houseplants that need a little more sunlight. Or do something bigger by starting your own vegetable garden in someone’s backyard or even on a rooftop. The important thing is just to start!
Getting your hands dirty (especially if it comes from the soil) is not only fun but helps you collect your thoughts and gives you an opportunity to assess what’s going on in your life.
Maybe you’ve been feeling anxious lately about work, school, or family issues; working in the garden will help you clear those thoughts from your head—and get them into the ground for something positive to grow instead of worrying about it!

2. Get outside
When it comes to maintaining your mental health, you have plenty of options. But if you’re strapped for time or want a low-key activity that can be done pretty much anywhere, there’s no better way to soothe your mind than going outside and taking in the sights of nature.
You don’t necessarily need a full day trip to the beach, either—just find yourself a nice tree or some flowers to look at and breathe deeply for 90 seconds. Or find an old oak or two and count how many squirrels run between them.
The key is to get outside (preferably in your area’s native ecosystem) and just relax while soaking up some vitamin D from the sun.
3. Start Writing
For many, writing is a way of getting feelings and thoughts out. It is a good way to express thoughts and feelings that you may have been having trouble conveying otherwise.
Writing can help you organize your thoughts, make sense of things, or even work through personal problems. Writing can also be a creative outlet, giving you the freedom to do whatever you want with your writing. ‘I am trying very hard to get better,’ she wrote in an emotional post shared almost 40,000 times and liked more than 160,000 times since it was posted on Sunday night. ‘I don’t always succeed but today I did.’ In the post, Ms. Oxford describes being ‘alone in bed with my laptop’ watching pornography for six hours at a time despite having active social lives and careers as a TV producer for children’s shows including Yo Gabba Gabba!.
After years of struggling with her addiction, she decided she needed help when she discovered herself fantasizing about sex with children while watching videos online.
She said: ‘It repulsed me but I couldn’t look away. …Then I found myself searching terms like “naked baby” and “child porn” – something had to change.’ Ms. Oxford admits that 12-step programs have helped her recovery but says the real strength behind overcoming addiction comes from talking with others who are going through similar experiences – something she didn’t have access to until now thanks to social media.

4. Support a cause you believe in
When you think of the phrase “mental health,” you may feel that it’s too broad a topic to focus on in your everyday life. But the truth is that many of us could improve our mental well-being if we took a bit more time to focus on it. Below are several ways you can show love and support for your mental health.
It’s hard to care about something if you don’t know about it, so do some research and raise awareness about your chosen cause. You have the opportunity to increase others’ understanding of a situation they may not be familiar with, give them resources they didn’t have before, or connect them with someone else who shares their interests.
Help others by showing support:-
If people in your community are working towards a change, show them that they’re not alone by attending an event or taking part in an organized activity.
Participating in a movement can give you a sense of belonging and boost your confidence by placing yourself among those who share similar goals and values. So, Be active physically. It’s well known that exercise boosts mental wellbeing because it releases endorphins into the body – just like when eating chocolate!
Make sure to choose activities that appeal to you physically—not only is this another way for you to better yourself mentally but also helps build self-confidence through teamwork and/or individual achievement (such as running or hiking)
5. Do something nice for someone else
When you’re feeling down, sometimes the best way to relieve stress is to focus on others. It’s a simple concept, but one that often goes overlooked in our fast-paced daily lives.
It’s okay if you’re too busy to commit to one of these suggestions each day; it helps to simply have this as a mental checklist of sorts that you can refer back to when feeling stressed or anxious, with all the options at your disposal.
Labiba noticed that Mark was struggling with his mental health and made him dinner, even though she was too busy with work herself. After, she told him about an elderly neighbor who was dying and how there wasn’t anyone taking care of her due to her family being overseas.
Labiba helped out by making sure daily medicine and food were delivered for her since no one else could do it. She also got to know other neighbors because they needed someone nice like Labiba around.
6. Explore ways to experience the arts
It offers plenty of great tips for how to engage in activities that can improve mental health. For starters, doing a bit of self-expressive art is a great way to break free from the stresses of modern life.

How these activities can improve my Mental Health?
Is being busy all the time a good thing? Not necessarily. Being busy in itself doesn’t make you happy—in fact, it can be a source of stress and anxiety. There are three main causes of this feeling:
- You may feel less productive when you’re constantly running from one thing to another.
- If you’ve been using an app like a to-do list, don’t overuse it; try to maintain a balance between being productive.
- When you don’t sleep enough, your mind may wander more than usual, keeping you from getting any real work done. Try to get at least six hours of sleep per night.
- Being too focused on the tasks in front of you can also leave your thinking unfocused or scattered; instead of focusing on what needs to be done right now, don’t overload your brain, Just do it!
